A lot of students struggle with speaking in French.
I think this is because many teachers don’t teach students the most common vocabulary they should be using in class right away.
You should aim to teach students this vocabulary as early as possible.
What I mean is, how is a student supposed to know how to ask you to go to the washroom, or to get something, or to go somewhere in French if they have not been introduced?
The way I like to do it is by giving them a vocabulary list and having them practice in class.
Sometimes, I give them a vocabulary list and have them translate it themselves. You can choose!
Here are some examples of extremely common expressions said in class:
- Can I go… – Est-ce que je peux aller…
- Can I have… – Est-ce que je peux avoir…
- Can I eat… – Est-ce que je peux manger…
- Hello – Bonjour
- Bye – Au revoir
- What is this? Qu’est-ce que c’ est ça?
Of course, there are more, but these are some of the basics.
Try to teach these to your class as well!
